A Proven Leader

Dr. Matasovic is a registered Geotechnical Engineer in California and a registered Professional Engineer in multiple states. He has over three decades of consulting, teaching, and research experience. He is a nationally recognized expert in seismic site response and deformation analysis as applied to seismic design of landfills, and seismic evaluation of Superfund sites and liquefiable soil deposits. His day-to-day practice includes involvement in geotechnical engineering design, analysis, and construction supervision for tailings storage facilities and heap leach pads; solid and hazardous waste sites (landfill liner, cover, and termination berms design); surface impoundments; dams, reservoirs, levees, and dikes; industrial and commercial facilities; public and recreational facilities; port, harbor, waterfront and coastal facilities; oil and gas infrastructure; transportation (traditional and design-build); and landslide mitigation. His specialty expertise is in geotechnical earthquake engineering, including advanced numerical and constitutive modeling and interpretation of results. He has provided litigation support and expert testimony on numerous matters including technical support to counsel for cost allocation and failure investigation cases; serving as technical expert, testifying expert, factual witness; and performing landslide evaluation, mitigation design and construction observation and management of landslide repairs.

Contributions to Science and Engineering

Dr. Matasovic is an author/co-author of over 100 archival and reference publications, and federal agency guidance documents, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance document for seismic design of Subtitle D municipal solid waste landfills, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidance document on geotechnical earthquake engineering design guidance for highway facilities, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) synthesis document on Practices and Procedures for Site-Specific Evaluation of Earthquake Ground Motions and, most recently, the NCHRP/National Academies of Sciences (NAS) guidance document for Seismic Site Response Analysis with Pore Water Pressure Generation published by The National Academies Press.

Dr. Matasovic has been inducted into the Academy of Geo-Professionals as a Diplomate. He actively participates in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Soil Dynamics and Embankment, Dams, and Slopes technical committees. He is the co-author of the ASCE Peck Award journal paper and is the recipient of the Prakash award for excellence in geotechnical earthquake engineering.
