Soil Properties Testing

GLA’s laboratory technicians have provided quality soil testing results for modeling, construction, and geotechnical projects for clients worldwide. Our laboratories provide:

  • Standard geotechnical testing (e.g., particle size analysis, proctor compaction testing, plasticity index, and specific gravity)
  • Hydrologic properties analyses (e.g., saturated hydraulic conductivity, moisture retention analyses, effective porosity)
  • Consolidation and strength testing (e.g., triaxial shear, direct shear, and one-dimensional swell and consolidation)
  • Project-specific, customized analyses, e.g., column testing, capillary barrier analyses, leach testing, and material-specific moisture retention analyses

Research/Development (R&D)

GLA delivers innovative, cost‑effective solutions backed by a long‑standing commitment to research and development. Since 1991, our R&D program has driven patented technologies, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant‑funded advancements, and industry‑recognized breakthroughs trusted by national labs, government agencies, universities, and private organizations—including our patented rapid brine screening test used by lithium producers worldwide. Our strengths:

  • Rapid screening test for relative brine release capacity (RBRC) using samples from lithium mining sites in the U.S. and abroad to estimate the brine released by pumping a brine-saturated geologic unit
  • Five SBIR Phase I and II awards
  • Patented technologies and testing methods
  • Research partnerships with national labs, agencies, and universities
  • Custom solutions for complex or unique environmental problems

Sensor Calibration

GLA’s Soils Testing and Research Laboratories are certified by an independent inspection and assessment agency on behalf of U.S. Department of Energy contractor to calibrate sensors and instruments we use to collect soils data. In addition to designing, installing, and operating a range of automated data collection and monitoring equipment, we calibrate these instruments:

  • Heat dissipation sensors
  • Water content reflectometers
  • Psychrometers
  • Gypsum blocks
  • Custom instrumentation

Construction Materials Testing

GLA’s high‑quality construction materials testing ensures that projects meet performance, safety, and specification requirements. We evaluate asphalt, concrete, aggregates, and other construction materials using advanced methods to verify compliance, durability, and mix design integrity. These tests help project teams make informed decisions and maintain quality throughout construction. Services include:

Continuous subsurface core logging using a Sonic Drilling Rig
  • Asphalt concrete analysis in the field (gradation, binder content, density, air voids, and stability)
  • Verification of mix design and project specification compliance
  • Aggregate and quarried materials testing (gradation, durability, sand equivalent, R‑value, specific gravity)
  • Concrete, steel, and material strength evaluation
  • Quality, durability, and suitability assessments for construction materials
