Carbon Management

Geo-Logic Associates applies our expertise in engineering, geology, and environmental consulting to support geologic capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.
Geo-Logic Associates has experience developing subsurface injection programs, vadose zone and groundwater monitoring programs, and multi-phase fluid models to support projects while protecting groundwater resources, reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere, and mitigating climate change.
CCS expert Dr. Gregory Schnaar was a member of the Class VI rulemaking development team at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and GLA authored key portions of the Class VI technical guidance documents, including the Testing and Monitoring Guidance.

Regulatory Support and Field Monitoring Services
Geo-Logic Associates applies our expertise in engineering, geology, and environmental consulting to support geologic CCS projects. We have experience developing subsurface injection programs, vadose zone and groundwater monitoring programs, and multi-phase fluid models to support projects while protecting groundwater resources, reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere, and mitigating climate change. Proper project siting, operation, and monitoring can minimize risks associated with CCS. Related services that GLA offers include:

- Permitting and regulatory compliance, including U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Class VI permitting, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) Plan development, and California Air Resources Board (CARB) Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) Site Certification for carbon credits
- U.S. EPA Class VI well permitting
- Subsurface analysis and modeling (geologic, geochemical, reservoir simulation)
- Field monitoring program development and implementation
- Geotechnical evaluation and engineering
- Injection project siting and feasibility
- Instrumentation for data collection
- Soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling
- Data management and reporting
- Risk assessment and corrective action review
- Third-party and technical assurance review
- Grant funding assistance, including applications for grant funding through the U.S. Department of Energy CarbonSAFE program
Regulatory Compliance Support
GLA experts supported U.S. EPA in developing its regulations for permitting carbon dioxide injection (Class VI) wells, as well as EPA’s Class VI technical guidance documents. Since then, we have assisted clients with permitting Class VI wells in more than six states, across multiple EPA regions, as well as in states that have primacy over Class VI permitting.

Subsurface Analysis and Modeling
Using a wide variety of subsurface data including drilling logs, borehole geophysics, two- and three-dimensional seismic, historical injection and production data, historical pressure and fluid measurements, regional geologic studies, and knowledge of depositional environments, modeling specialists can analyze site conditions and perform simple or detailed reservoir characterizations to support feasibility studies and permit applications. GLA modelers are adept at geologic, geochemical, reservoir, and leakage modeling assessments.

Monitoring and Reporting
GLA develops and implements field monitoring programs for CCS projects, giving operators, stakeholders, and regulators assurance that injection operations are performed safely and retain protection of groundwater and the environment. Monitoring programs are designed to fit the needs of the project and are optimized to use the most appropriate technologies that meet federal and state regulatory requirements.

To support project reporting requirements, our expert data managers ensure this monitoring data is:
Class VI Primacy Solutions
GLA offers full scope support for new Class VI primacy applications and underground injection control (UIC) Program Revisions; tailored to fit a state’s unique needs, timeline, and political context. We support Class VI regulatory and monitoring programs across the U.S., working alongside project operators, and state agencies, universities.
Beyond the primacy application, GLA can educate and equip agencies with the tools, knowledge, and internal capacity to effectively implement, administer, and enforce the Class VI program after primacy is granted. GLA offers technical expertise in:

- Regulatory analysis of new/existing UIC programs
- Class VI technical plan integration
- Regulatory crosswalk development
- Drafting state specific rules (statutes and regulations)
- Draft rule documentation and stringency justification
- Advising and drafting of program description and all additional application sections
- Memorandums of agreement
- Governor’s letter
- Letters of support
- Attorney general’s statement
- Stakeholder engagement services
- Drafting of formal EPA memos, and materials for public notice, comment, and hearings
- Public process support and technical responses to comments, public inquiries, and EPA feedback during the process
- Project management and reporting
- Capacity building and knowledge transfer to state staff/program enforcement authority
- Tracking of all US primacy activity
