A Proven Leader

Gregory Schnaar, PhD, PG, is a Principal Environmental Scientist and Hydrologist with more than 20 years of professional experience. He serves as GLA’s Expert Services Market Leader.

Contributions to the Science

Dr. Schnaar specializes in contaminant transport evaluation of organic solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater, forensic environmental analyses, groundwater and vadose zone modeling, watershed-scale hydrologic studies, field sampling and geologic sequestration of carbon dioxide.  He has managed a variety of environmental and water resource investigations, including quantitative evaluation of non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) migration and groundwater impacts from solvent releases, leaking tanks, and pipeline leaks; site investigations and remedial action alternatives analysis associated with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) corrective action programs; vapor intrusion risk assessment consistent with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) and California state protocols; and development of cost allocations for remedial cost recovery.

Dr. Schnaar has served as an expert technical consultant to the U.S. EPA Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water and is an Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed journal Groundwater.  He has led research projects funded by the Superfund Basic Research Program focused on improving understanding of organic solvent migration in groundwater and the vadose zone.  He has also provided state and federal court expert witness testimony related to fate and transport of contaminants and historical site operations relating to the potential for contaminant releases.  He has taught courses in Environmental Science and Water Resources as a faculty member at the University of Maryland, College Park and as an adjunct faculty member at George Washington University.
