Challenge

Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority needed additional aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells, and needed to reduce arsenic production in selected existing groundwater supply wells.

Solutions

GLA wholly owned subsidiary John Shomaker & Associates, Inc. completed ASR assessments of various sites, well assessment plans, studies that identified geologic units responsible for contributing elevated arsenic concentrations to wells, developed specifications for well modifications and implemented modifications that successfully reduced production of groundwater with elevated arsenic, developed drilling and completion specifications for new ASR wells.

Results

We developed technical specifications for two new ASR wells to increase groundwater storage, and developed and implemented partial plug backs of wells that reduced arsenic concentrations to below drinking water standards.
