Challenge
The Village of Brandon set out to expand its public library to better serve a growing and evolving community. The expansion needed to preserve the building’s historic character and meet modern regulatory and ADA requirements. Delivering a seamless addition within a constrained footprint, aligning design, funding, and permitting, required a comprehensive engineering approach.
Our Solution
Kunkel Engineering Group led a full-service delivery model, integrating architectural and civil engineering design, from concept through construction. Our team developed a 1,334-square-foot addition that nearly doubles the library’s footprint while maintaining architectural continuity with the original structure. We engineered flexible interior spaces, including a multi-purpose community room for programming, inviting children’s area, and modern collaborative and individual workspaces, alongside ADA-compliant amenities.
We also navigated regulatory permitting and administered the $473,000 USDA Community Facilities Grant, and managed bidding and construction to maintain alignment with scope, schedule, and budget. Throughout, we coordinated closely with stakeholders to ensure the design balanced technical performance, accessibility, and long-term functionality. The expansion was also made possible through the generosity of community donors and successful local fundraising efforts, reflecting a true spirit of partnership and shared investment in Brandon’s future.

The Results
The expanded Brandon Public Library now delivers a highly functional, accessible, and future-ready community asset. The new space supports expanded programming, enhances user experience, and strengthens community engagement—while reflecting the Village’s historic identity. The project stands as a model for efficiently delivering engineered solutions that elevate civic infrastructure.
