Challenge

The Quill Wastewater Treatment Plant discharges Class 2 reclaimed wastewater for non-potable reuse applications including street cleaning, toilet flushing, and snow making. This facility operates under a Discharge Permit issued by the New Mexico Environment Department’s (NMED’s) Groundwater Quality Bureau. The Discharge Permit is intended to protect groundwater and wastewater from contaminants at the facility and must be renewed every five years.

Solutions

In compliance with its discharge permit, Geo-Logic has conducted monthly, quarterly, and annual discharge sampling from various locations at the facility. Our team has collected influent and effluent samples, and, using disposable bailers, non-dedicated submersible pumps, and autosamplers, collected groundwater samples from four monitoring wells and acquired the proper permitting and oversaw the construction of a fifth monitoring well and submitted the well completion report to the OSE. We have prepared the required quarterly reports to NMED and when required have prepared Corrective Action Plans based on sampling results when needed. At the County’s request, we also prepared an aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) feasibility report analyzing the permitting, infrastructure costs, operations and maintenance costs, and potential locations for reclaiming treated wastewater in order to preserve water for future generations.

Results

GLA has provided monitoring and reporting for years for the Quill Wastewater Treatment Plant in accordance with the discharge permit. Our services have helped to ensure that  the County remain in compliance with the permit terms and NMED requirements.
